I've been using the Remind app for a few years now, and I only figured out this year that the more ridiculous the messages I send are, the better it works for my students. This generally requires a little bit of facility with meme-generators, or light photo-editing, but it's totally worth the time investment (which is minimal). Granted, this is as much a function of my students populations as it is anything else (I wouldn't be sending out snark if I was teaching a room full of fifth-graders), but it works for my class.
